Smarter Systems, Faster Results: Leveraging Nexera QX Multiplexing Technology to Accelerate LCMS Throughput

Abstract

Increased flexibility and throughput with analytical instrumentation is an ever-increasing demand within the pharma, clinical, and forensic toxicology laboratories. Multiplex analysis offers significant advantages with respect to time by leveraging multiple streams to overlap multiple samples and maintain minimal dwell time of the mass spectrometer. The Nexera QX multiplexing LCMS system is a next generation platform that can alleviate many of the commonly associated problems with existing high throughput LCMS assays. With advanced Analytical Intelligence (AI) features including dedicated washing post high concentration sample detection and flexible autosampler needle rinsing as well as full analytical flow path rinsing, downtime can be minimized to keep the instrument operational longer with limited maintenance. Additionally, with QX Solution software a seamless operation of the instrumentation with simple user interfaces and customizable batch importing options can be achieved. The system is also flexible depending on the analytical needs of the laboratory whether a 2-channel or 4-channel system is needed as well as the option for online SPE. This talk will discuss several of these analytical features and highlight customer applications that have applied Nexera QX within their laboratories. Additionally, Shimadzu has developed a new online SPE column made for use on the Nexera QX system and developed a fast online SPE multiplexed LCMS method for steroid hormones in human serum. Details of this methodology and column improvements will be highlighted.

 Bio

Logan works for Shimadzu Scientific Instruments (SSI) as a Field Application Scientist with their Research & Development group. He joined SSI in 2018 as the Mid-Atlantic territory’s Mass Spectrometry Technical Support Scientist. During his time with Shimadzu, he has been involved in numerous LCMS projects in the environmental, pharma, and clinical toxicology markets. Most notably he has been involved in a long-term instrumentation and application development project for the new Nexera QX multiplexing LCMS product line. Through his work with the Nexera QX product he has achieved two patents related to the development of the product line’s stream management/logic.

Prior to SSI, he focused his undergraduate research in the biochemistry field looking at apoptotic response of leukemia cells and attended graduate school where he focused his research on the development of quantitative speciated isotope dilution LCMS assays using various analytical techniques; QQQ/QTOF LCMS, and ICP-MS. During graduate school he led the daily operation of the school’s LCMS core facility within the chemistry department. He has attended and presented numerous oral and poster presentations at PittCon, American Society for Mass Spectrometry, National Environmental Monitoring Conference, AOAC, SOFT, AAPS, and various other conferences. He currently serves as one of the technical experts at SSI for PFAS analysis using EPA and ASTM methodologies and is developing a new ASTM method for extractable PFAS in consumer products via ASTM F15 committee.
