Roger Prince Receives the North Jersey ACS Section 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Roger C. Prince of the Biomedical Sciences Division of ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company is an internationally recognized leader and spokesperson for environmental science and pioneer in the fields of bioenergetics, bioinorganic chemistry and oil spill research. The award will be presented to Dr. Prince at the NJ ACS annual award dinner on May 21 at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

“Forgotten Genius” – PBS NOVA special on Percy Julian

Percy Julian was a pioneering chemist and a member of the National Academy of Science — the first African American chemist to receive that honor. NOVA produced a documentary on his life and work, which was aired on PBS and is available on DVD. View the following links for further information:

Discovery, Selection, and Development of Drug Candidates: A Senior Leadership Perspective

This event involved four Vice Presidents in charge of research at four of the largest Pharma companies in the US. The evening ended with a keynote talk by Dr. P. Roy Vagelos (retired Chairman and CEO, Merck).

African American National Biography

Jeannette Brown, a North Jersey ACS chemist, has written the stories of seven women chemists for African American National Biography. In this set of books there are biographies of only 19 chemists and chemical engineers. This is probably because most historians have not researched this history. Ms Brown had the pleasure of being one of the authors of seven of the biographies of African American women chemists. She is a retired African American synthetic organic chemist who has become a historian of African American women chemists.

2005 ACS Fall Meeting in Washington DC – Councilor Report

For the 2005 ACS Fall Meeting in Washington DC, North Jersey had full representation at the Council meeting. Harvard’s Free Tuition Announcement

Beginning with the 2004-05 year, parents in families with incomes of less than $40,000 will no longer be expected to contribute to the cost of attending Harvard for their children. In addition, Harvard will reduce the contributions expected of families with incomes between $40,000 and $60,000.
