NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Past Events:Most Recent Event:11-10-2011: Evolution of a Scientist Lecture Series – A Professor's Journey This unique free lecture series showcases local and regional chemists from academia, industry and the private sector and invite them to share their unique journeys and detail how they arrived at where they are today. The New Jersey Younger Chemists Committee held our first installment in the Evolution of a Scientist lecture series at Rutgers University on November 10, 2011. Our inaugural speaker was Dr. Amber Charlebois, an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Amber shared her adventures to Professorhood thru both industry and academia and gave us glimpses into the challenges she experienced and rewarding moments. She offered advice on many topics including who and how to ask for recommendation letters and the importance of building a good professional network. Her current areas of research include nucleic acid visualization, honey bee pheromone synthesis and quantitation, HPLC analysis of protein structure, synthesis of potential biomarker for childhood autism, and chemical education. In addition, Professor Charlebois is chair-elect of the North Jersey Section of the ACS.
Calling All Volunteers! October 22 ChemExpo at Liberty Science Center
Celebrate National Chemistry Week with the NJACS YCC at the Liberty Science Center. Calling All Volunteers! Volunteers are needed for the NJACS YCC activity table at the Liberty Science Center on Saturday, October 22, 2011. The theme this year “Chemistry—Our Health, Our Future!” Explore the positive impacts of chemistry as it relates to nutrition, hygiene, and medicine. The activity hours are from 10 am to 2 pm. Volunteers have the option to stay all day or to choose a morning or afternoon shift. The entrance fee to the center is waived for volunteers so when you are finished with your shift you can visit exhibits in the center.
This event has been a huge success for the last two years and this year we are we are working hard to make it even better! If you are interested in participating, have an idea for an activity or would like more information- please email Lauren at formulatornova@yahoo.com. If you would like to volunteer please register below. We look forward to seeing you soon! Sincerely, National Chemistry Week (NCW) is a community-based annual event that unites ACS local sections, businesses, schools, and individuals in communicating the importance of chemistry to our quality of life. Annual YCC Fall Happy Hour Event... Please join us Thursday, October 13th at the Harvest Moon Brewery in New Brunswick for our annual YCC Fall happy hour event. It will be a great way to network with other YCC members and/or meet new ones. We will take a short brewery tour. Appetizers will be served and the first drink is free for the first ten people to arrive. Friends and family are welcome.
Please register at: www.ycc-info.rutgers.edu/ P.s. If you are interested in holding an officer position on the YCC executive committee, please let us know -- Lauren Castelli (formulatornova@yahoo.com). 2011 North Jersey Younger Chemist Committee Mentoring Picnic at Liberty ParkThe 2011 Annual Younger Chemist Committee mentoring picnic, co-hosted by our parent chapter, the NJACS executive committee, was held on Sunday, June 26 at the Liberty State Park. 22 members and friends joined the event and enjoyed the great BBQ food, the good weather, and a great view of New York City from the site. Young chemists and students took this opportunity for academic networking among themselves and with mentors of senior chemists such as Emmanuel Aouad, NY/NJ Chapter President of the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), and Bill Suits from NJACS executive committee. This is the fourth consecutive year that the YCC has participated in this event and we hope to help make it even bigger and better next year. We were also able to take advantage of the opportunity to introduce our group to local college students and expand our membership by 10 people new members.
We would like to thank everyone who attended the event, the NJACS for co-sponsoring, Emmanuel Aouad for being a spectacular event photographer. This event was made possible due to contribution from the NJACS. 04-30-2011 – YCC at Rutgers Day
02-23-2010 – The Younger Chemists Committee presented two special screenings of: “Naturally Obsessed: the Making of a Scientist” Come See the Drama Unfold! ![]() (click picture to view the trailer) Admission was free but registration was requested for planning purposes. “Naturally Obsessed: the Making of a Scientist” is a new documentary film that reveals a rare and fascinating view of the world of laboratory science. Featuring a group of eager students, mentored by Dr. Larry Shapiro, the film follows them along a challenging and uncertain journey toward their PhD degrees. As the story unfolds, the interdependent mentor-student relationship reveals the human face of scientific research. The film was shot over three years' time at Columbia University Medical Center and also documents how x-ray crystallography enables the discovery of the molecular structure of the AMPK protein, considered prime for targeted drug development because of its relevance to diabetes and obesity. The documentary film will be shown in two locations:
12-08-2009 – CAREER PANEL 2009 In conjunction with the Rutgers
Chemistry Society,
NJACS YCC will be hosting the 1st annual Rutgers Chemistry Conference
on December 8, 2009. 10-25-2009 – NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK – Liberty Science Center Volunteer at the NJACS YCC activity table at the Liberty Science Center on October 24, 2009.
