03-07-2012: North Jersey Younger Chemist Committee Trivia Night
This year instead of hosting the same old happy hour, we decided to spice it up a bit. What better way to bring a group of driven type-A scientists together than offer them a chance to engage their brains in friendly competition?
The evening began with a social hour encouraging attendees to mingle and interact with each other over a game of pool or a piece of pizza. Bill Suits and members from our executive committee made themselves available to give attendees information on resume assistance, job placements, mentoring and upcoming events. The evening concluded with an opportunity to continue the discussions while competing in the Fox and Hound's Wednesday night trivia competition.
We would like to thank everyone who attended the first NJYCC trivia night at the Fox and Hound in Edison, NJ for making it such a smashing success and due to popular demand plan on holding another trivia night later in the year.
Special congratulations go out to the “Mad Scientists” for coming in 3rd place!!!
11-10-2011: Evolution of a Scientist Lecture Series – A Professor's Journey
This unique free lecture series showcases local and regional chemists from academia, industry and the private sector and invite them to share their unique journeys and detail how they arrived at where they are today.
The New Jersey Younger Chemists Committee held our first installment in the Evolution of a Scientist lecture series at Rutgers University on November 10, 2011.
Our inaugural speaker was Dr. Amber Charlebois, an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Amber shared her adventures to Professorhood thru both industry and academia and gave us glimpses into the challenges she experienced and rewarding moments. She offered advice on many topics including who and how to ask for recommendation letters and the importance of building a good professional network.
Her current areas of research include nucleic acid visualization, honey bee pheromone synthesis and quantitation, HPLC analysis of protein structure, synthesis of potential biomarker for childhood autism, and chemical education. In addition, Professor Charlebois is chair-elect of the North Jersey Section of the ACS.

2011 North Jersey Younger Chemist Committee Mentoring Picnic at Liberty Park
The 2011 Annual Younger Chemist Committee mentoring picnic, co-hosted by our parent chapter, the NJACS executive committee, was held on Sunday, June 26 at the Liberty State Park. 22 members and friends joined the event and enjoyed the great BBQ food, the good weather, and a great view of New York City from the site. Young chemists and students took this opportunity for academic networking among themselves and with mentors of senior chemists such as Emmanuel Aouad, NY/NJ Chapter President of the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), and Bill Suits from NJACS executive committee.
This is the fourth consecutive year that the YCC has participated in this event and we hope to help make it even bigger and better next year. We were also able to take advantage of the opportunity to introduce our group to local college students and expand our membership by 10 people new members.
We would like to thank everyone who attended the event, the NJACS for co-sponsoring, Emmanuel Aouad for being a spectacular event photographer.
This event was made possible due to contribution from the NJACS.

04-30-2011 – YCC at Rutgers Day
|
YCC at Rutgers Day - Saturday April 30
The NJACS Younger Chemists Committee
celebrated the
International Year of Chemistry 2011
with a learning booth at the Rutgers Day 2011 festival, presenting
interactive, entertaining, and educational activities for all ages
focussing on UV.
Children made their
own UV detecting bracelet using UV-sensitive beads. When exposed
to sunlight these beads take on a dazzling array of colors. With
some simple experiments, families also learned how to test
the power of UV rays, and how sunscreen protects you from UV
over-exposure. This was a great opportunity for families to
experience and enjoy science, while building awareness of the dangers
of excessive sun exposure and learning how to protect your skin.
NJACS YCC participates annually at Rutgers Day. Everything is free!

“Naturally Obsessed: the Making of a Scientist”
is a new documentary film that reveals a rare and fascinating view of
the
world of laboratory science. Featuring a group of eager students,
mentored by Dr.
Larry Shapiro, the film follows them along a
challenging and uncertain journey toward
their PhD degrees. As the story unfolds, the
interdependent mentor-student relationship
reveals the human face of scientific
research.
The film was shot over three years' time at
Columbia University Medical Center and
also documents how x-ray crystallography
enables the discovery of the molecular
structure of the AMPK protein, considered
prime for targeted drug development
because of its relevance to diabetes and
obesity.
The documentary film will be shown in two
