Theory
Carbon dioxide gas is produced from the reaction of sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid.

Materials
Glacial acetic acid Sodium bicarbonate

Safety
Wear protective gloves, chemical resistant apron and safety goggles

Preparation

1M NaHCO3 84 g NaHCO3 to 1L DI water.

Demonstration

Place a 500 ml graduated cylinder in a dish tub or battery jar. Pour about 50-75 ml of glacial acetic acid in the cylinder. Pour

about 50-75 ml 1 M NaHCO3 into a beaker. Add indicator to both solutions. Pour the NaHCO3 into the cylinder.

Disposal
Solution may be poured down the drain and flushed with water.
