Super Glue Demo
Presented by Bettyann Howson, Chatham HS, Chatham, NJ
Description
An endothermic reaction 'glues' a wet beaker to a waxed board.
Application
Energy Chemical Reactions Thermodynamics
Theory
The dissolving of ammonium nitrate is endothermic. Heat is drawn away from water
that is on a board causing it to freeze and hold the beaker to the board.
Materials
Water Ammonium nitrate Ice cubes
Safety
Wear protective gloves and safety goggles
Demonstration
Wet the bottom of a 250 ml beaker and set it on
a waxed board. Fill the beaker with an ice and water mixture. Add ammonium nitrate
(about 100 g or more). The solution should get cold enough to freeze the beaker
to the board
Disposal
Solution may be poured down the drain and flushed with water.
