Dorothy Lehmkuhl

December 21, 1920 - June 1, 2007

Dorothy Schroeder Lehmkuhl, 86, of Annapolis, died in her sleep June 1 at Ginger Cove Health Center.

Mrs. Lehmkuhl was born Dec. 21, 1920, in Kearny, N.J, grew up in Lyndhurst, N.J., and graduated from Montclair State Teachers College in 1942, where she later earned a master's degree and 30 additional hours of study.

In 1943 she married George W. Lehmkuhl who died in 1993.

A chemistry teacher at Lyndhurst High School, she taught hundreds of students, raised three children, and lived an active life in the communities of Lyndhurst and Upper Montclair, N.J., before moving to Annapolis in 2003.

She worked at Aberdeen Proving Grounds as an analytical chemist during World War II and then taught high school chemistry from 1956 to 1984. In 1984, she started her retirement, traveling and becoming even more active in many organizations, including Eclipse Chapter 226 of The Order of the Eastern Star, Lyndhurst and Montclair Women's Clubs, Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, the New Jersey Science Teachers Association, National Educational Association and the American Chemical Society.

She worked on numerous NEA and ACS committees, earning countless awards, and served as an editor for an ACS publication, until sometime after her 80th birthday.

An animal lover and wild bird enthusiast, she shared her home with dogs, cats, boa constrictors and even a caged raccoon. She was a swimmer, vegetable gardener and world traveler. On her last sojourn to Panama and Costa Rica shortly before her 85th birthday, she delighted and surprised fellow cruise ship passengers by diving into the Pacific Ocean and joining them for a swim. She was the answer person for the New York Times crossword puzzles at the Montclair Beach Club during the summer.

Surviving are her children, D. Christine Lehmkuhl of Westford, Mass., David W. Lehmkuhl of Hoboken, N.J., and Robert W. Lehmkuhl of Annapolis.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, N.J. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Episcopal Church, 581 Valley Road, Upper Montclair. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. in Restland Memorial Park in East Hanover, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial bench fund established in her name at The Presby Gardens, 474 Upper Mountain Ave., Upper Montclair, NJ 07043.
